When it comes to Roleplaying game groups, there are a lot of them out there making podcasts, play videos, interactions, short form content, and so much more with a game system that is well loved, however, when you think about it online play games, you likely think about Matt Mercer and their Geek & Sundry series Critical Role! However, if you are a fan of Geek & Sundry, you may have heard of their other well loved series Sagas of Sundry, which was previously Dungeon Mastered by Ivan Van Norman. This series gave another venue for more roleplaying.
Now the series is back for Goblin Mode, their new series is lead by Amy Vorpahl, a veteran and long time player to the world of Dungeons & Dragons. We have watched the first three episodes and we are here to talk about the concept of the new series, the energy and style of it, and if we think you should check it out too!
So let’s jump into our review!
Basic Synopsis
The series starts off and focuses on Tippy, Bizzee, and Fibs, played by Jason Nguyen, Danielle Radford, and Dan Casey respectively. The group are a series of minions inside a Dungeon set into the world of the game. However, the minions begin their journey in a failed pit trap having accidently found themselves there at the most opportune time. Due to their trapped event, they narrowly escaped the carnage as a group of heroes ran through the dungeon, slaughtering their coworkers, their friends, and even their boss!
They have to escape the trap, with their limited low level skills, and make their way through the dungeon, discover what happened, discover what’s left, and make enemies and allies along the way.
As they almost make it to their boss’s chamber, they are met with an old coworker who had left the dungeon, and now has joined the minion union. With the death of their boss, the dungeon’s ownership falls to the union, and the player characters are… gasp… NON-UNION!
Their home no longer their own, the group ventures out into the world of the first time learning their place, and stumbling through their journey as they make their way toward getting revenge against the heroes who attacked their dungeon, getting back the main treasure of their dungeon, or finding a backdoor into the Union!
Only time, and goblins can tell!
My Take
While I will argue that a series called Goblin Mode should have had a better spread of Goblins to Skeletons than actually are in the show, the players are fun, the way they don’t take anything too seriously, but play the hell out of their characters makes the series a lot of fun. Unfortunately due to the way the players put their feet into their mouths, I regularly think they are going to TPK (Total Party Kill) on the regular during the episodes.
The series has been completed already, and is releasing once a week, with supporting videos from the cast breaking down the episodes, which makes the experience a lot of fun, and with plenty of things to engage in as you wait for the next episode.
