When it comes to 3D printers, there’s primarily two different versions of them, a filament printer and a resin printer. Filament printers can work with a myriad of materials including PLA all the way up to actual metals and composite materials. The way a filament 3D printer works is that it applies filament down to a hot bed. Building up until it has created an actual object through a layer of steps.
A resin printer works a little bit differently. A resin printer actually prints upside down. It uses a pool of resin and a setting light to form layers of solid resin upon a build plate as it slowly rises and drops allowing it to build new layers up of resin.
Both work in steps, but primarily when it comes to resin printers, the print comes off more cleanrly and less layered looking. However, resin is a very dangerous substance to work with. When you do work with it you should be in a well ventilated area, wear gloves and a mask, and keep the liquid resin off of your flesh, it gets through your skin and put toxic chemicals into your body.
Additionally, when you finish your print with a resin printer, unlike a filament printer, you have to clean and set your print. What this means primarily is that you have to take your resin prints and rinse off all the additional resin with isopropyl alcohol in an agitated bath. Then after you are done with the rinsing you have to set the print with UV lights.
For our first printer, we actually were able to snag a group of the Anycubic Photon Mono One printers and we picked up the Comgrow Wash and Cure Station to help finish our prints as we go through.
As you can see in our footage, the printer is incredibly easy and pretty fast in regards to 3D printing, but do need to work in a well ventilated area because the toxic fumes from the resin is not good for you.
Our print unfortunately stuck to the light screen at the end which is easily resolved by a light scraping. Be careful to not damage the screen when you separate it though. Traditionally the print would normally attach to and stay on the build plate. To help resolve this issue from occurring it’s a good idea to either warm up your build plate before hand or work in a warmer area.
While the Anycubic Photon Mono One is not available for purchase at this current time, you can pick up any of Anycubic Photon Mono later model of printers and they work pretty similar to this model. If you want to pick up the Comgrow Wash and Cure Station Here.
