Unboxing The Pixicade

Want to teach your child how to create video games, or find a new way to engage with them? I have the game for you. Pixicade from Abacus Brands is an application that allows you to scan pictures drawn with specific colors and create a myriad of games that can be played single player, two-player, or even teach fundamentals of physics and game design.

With the pre-packaged set that we’re showcasing here, users get two codes that can be used on tablets or devices and includes Pixicade Pro for the app while also providing over 100 pages of lessons and tips for anyone who is interested in learning how to use the system to create their own games.

It is recommended for ages ten and up, but if you want to start early with your six year-old and up, you can do so as long as you stick around to help them out.

My 6-year-old daughter loves working with me to design levels, and whenever we make a mistake we can easily edit and fix it in the application. When she tires of my concepts and wants to play alone, she jumps into the many different games that are available in the app created by other users.

If drawing is not your forte, don’t worry. The app itself has all the resources and items available in it to allow you to procedurally build your levels and games.
