Storm King’s Hyperbreed – Comic Book Review

Hey there, folks! Jim, here. I usually review Indie books and provide information on Pokemon GO. Here’s a little something different from me, though; a comic book review.

Storm King comics has graciously provided us here at Nerd News Social with some review copies of their Hyperbreed series. I was pretty excited to check these out when it was offered to me. I enjoy comics and it’s been a while since I’ve checked out a new I.P. In that arena.

So, let’s crack open Issue 1.

Basic Synopsis

We open in a large ship, right there on the bridge. There’s three characters playing cards. They’re interesting looking to say the least. These are Splices – human/animal hybrids, presumably created in the distant future to help humanity colonize space. They’re on a relatively easy mission to transport a cargo load of explosive ore.

You have Cammo, Fext and Byyr. Cammo looks to be a lizard person, Fext seems more mammalian and Byyr looks like a very large werewolf ala Universal Studios wolfman. Interesting character designs!

Their card game is interrupted by alarms as they drop out of spacefold. (Think Warp speed or Hyperspace.) We get a little discussion about the state of the splice rights movement and their employment specifically. It’s an interesting bit of world-building, but it’s thwarted by the arrival of Mak stalkers. These are our alien bad guys and apparently really bad news. They have a weapon which starts crystallizing the hull of our heroes’ ship and compromising their systems.

Things only get worse when the Mak board the ship and a fight ensues. Battling in a failing ship loaded with volatile, explosive compounds is never a great situation but we get to see some of our crew’s abilities in action.

Will they make it out unscathed? Or at least less-scathed? Pick up a copy to find out.

My Take

This is a fun book. It has the aesthetics of some of my favorite 90s titles, and honestly, that’s the primary vibe I get. It kind of feels like Guardians of the Galaxy by way of Image. And that’s honestly pretty great. I’m looking forward to finding out more about the make-up of this universe and exactly where Splices fit in with regard to the rest of humanity and where humanity fits in amongst a wider universe.

The bad guys, too, are interesting. They’re a varied looking bunch which is refreshing – they aren’t the homogeneous, faceless alien horde of many other space-faring franchises. These guys, the Mak, look like they could be interesting characters in their own right if they get the same level of development as the heroes. Again, we’ll have to wait and see.

You can purchase the paperback Here! You definitely don’t want to miss that! More issues will be reviewed soon!
