Captain Marvel: What You Should Know

A lot of hype is going around for the newest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) which comes out THIS WEEK! That’s right, we are talking Captain Marvel. This article will be a brief overview of what you need to know about Captain Marvel, about Carol Danvers, and a few things you should know about the movie. Captain Marvel will also be a very important character in Avengers: Endgame which is set to be released April 26th. So, if you like the Avengers series but don’t really want to watch this movie, that’s okay. But I recommend seeing it to get the full effect of Avengers: Endgame, or at least watch it for the adorable fuzzy four-legged star of Captain Marvel, a cat named Goose.

**PREPARE FOR POSSIBLE SPOILERS BASED OFF THE COMICS AND MOVIE CHARACTERS**

So let’s start off with some comic book background about Captain Marvel. First of all, Captain Marvel was originally created by Stan Lee (writer) and Gene Colan (art) and was an alien military officer called Captain Mar-Vell of the Kree Imperial Militia. Captain Mar-Vell was a hybrid Kree to look more human so he could spy on Earth for the Kree. Mar-Vell ended up turning against his race by deciding to defend the Earth against evil invaders.

KREE SIDE NOTE

The Kree were originally created by Stan Lee (writer) and Jack Kirby (artist), and have appeared through all the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and also in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series. True Kree resemble humans almost exactly, with the exception of blue skin, but eventually other racial evolutions and hybrids were created. There are more kinds of Kree but I’ll let you dive in further on your own time if you are interested. Kree have a higher strength level and speed than that of a human due to their home planet of Hala having higher gravity. Though the lack of nitrogen in the atmosphere of Earth compared to their planet means they need an assisted breathing device to breathe comfortably. The Kree were drawn to Earth due to its sentient life and then began to experiment on the Earth’s humans, thus creating powerful Inhumans, for two reasons – to investigate possible ways of circumventing their own evolutionary stagnation, and to create a powerful soldiers to use against their enemies. Eventually the Kree wanted to “erase” humanity and use Earth for an intergalactic war with the Skrulls.

After Captain Mar-Vell’s death in the graphic novel, The Death of Captain Marvel published in 1982, there were a few more Captain Marvels before Carol Danvers. There was Monica Rambeau, Genis-Vell, Phyla-Vell, Khn’nr, Noh-Varr AND THEN FINALLY Carol Danvers, (also known as Ms. Marvel, Binary, and Warbird), who then assumed the mantle of Captain Marvel. She was created by Roy Thomas (writer) and Gene Colan (artist) and was an officer in the U.S. Air Force but due to an explosion of a Kree device called the “Psyche-Magnetron”, her DNA was fused with none other than…. Mar-Vell which turned her into a human-Kree hybrid which gave her superhuman powers.

Carol Danver’s Captain Marvel abilities and powers include superhuman strength, endurance, stamina, physical durability, can absorb certain forms of energy to enhance her strength, can fly at roughly six times the speed of sound, a limited precognitive “seventh sense” and a perfectly amalgamated human/Kree physiology that rendered her resistant to most toxins and poisons.

Now that we know a bit more about Captain Marvel and Carol Danvers, let’s talk about a few things we should know and can expect in the upcoming Captain Marvel movie. The movie will be set in 1995 and will follow Carol Danvers, a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, as she turns into one of the galaxy’s mightiest heroes and joins Starforce, an elite Kree military team, before returning home with questions about her past and identity when Earth is caught in the center of a galactic conflict between two alien worlds.

In the movie, we will also see Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as the future director of S.H.I.E.L.D., who at this time is a low level bureaucrat and before his signature eye patch. Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) as the shape-shifting leader of the Skrull invasion of Earth but who works undercover within S.H.I.E.L.D. as Fury’s boss. Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) who we have seen in Guardians of the Galaxy who is also in the Kree military. Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), who is not only single mother to Monica Rambeau who we talked about previously, but also is Danvers oldest friends and fellow Air Force pilot who goes by the call sign “Photon.” We will also see Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as a rookie agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the youngest we have ever seen him dating back before his famous quote in the 2008 Iron Man movie, “Mr. Stark, this isn’t my first rodeo.” And not last, and not least, but it’s just where I will end listing the characters, there will be Danver’s cat Goose! Who originally in the comic book series was called Chewie after the beloved Chewbacca.

As I said, this movie is getting a lot of hype and very much looking forward to it for the amazing action and also I need something to hold me over until Avengers: Endgame comes out. So will you be watching this movie? Do you have a favorite Captain Marvel from the comic book series? Do you think Goose deserves his own movie? Let us know in the comments!
