Rochelle Stops By The Carlsbad Flower Fields

Spring is here! And you know what that means: Flowers!! Since flower season seems to be so fleeting, it’s time to catch the beautiful flowers while you can at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad.

Located just minutes away from Legoland, just off the 5 FWY near the outlets, you will find this incredible space, with a rainbow of flowers spanning the hillside. For more than 30 years, the Flower Fields has been one of the largest producers of Ranunculus Flowers and bulbs in Southern California, and is the only one open to the public. It boasts over 50 acres dedicated to growing one of the finest strains in the world.

Walk up the flowery hillside and pose in front of your favorite colors! Just be mindful not to step over the green tape. There will be workers there watching you, and they will be quick to remind you to keep off. These precious flowers should not be trampled on! There is a 6.5 minute allowance for each party to take their turn with each display. Most move a lot quicker than that though! Our favorites were the oversized green chair and the tractor. Hands down my daughter’s favorite is the tractor! (We had to pull her away from it to let the next person have their turn.)

Not only is this a photographer’s dream land, but it brings you so many fun activities, making it the perfect family trip. Sift through sand in the water as you mine for some polished gemstones at the Mining Company. Get lost in the fragrant Sweet Pea Maze. Be curious in the Illusion Garden where you suddenly are flower-sized like Alice herself in Wonderland. Take a tractor wagon ride and explore the grounds with a tour of the famous Flower Fields. Hear and observe the songs of sweet birds in Don Miller’s Garden. Play on Santa’s Playground, where whimsical mushroom and fairy-like playhouses and slides from Santa’s Village have been relocated. Marvel at the orchids in the Cymbidium Greenhouse. Watch demonstrations by Master Gardeners about garden design, planting, composting, and more! Pick some blueberries at their U-Pick experience. Pay tribute to the United States with the red, white, and blue petunias that make up the American Flag of Flowers.

You can easily spend an entire day here. We went on a Saturday so there was a lot to see. We watched a BMX demonstration, popped bubbles with a professional bubble master, admired the Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) in the barn, and were entertained by a magician. There was also face paintings and balloon making (take home a balloon animal or even flower.) If you’re hungry, they have delicious pizzas and ice cream made on-site. Munch on huge bags of kettle popcorn big enough for you to enjoy for days to come! The strawberry lemonade was the perfect remedy to quench our thirst! Bathrooms are limited but available and clean. To exit, you walk through an Armstrong Garden Center where you can buy yourself a bouquet of flowers to take home with you.

Our visit to the gardens is always pleasant. Just remember to arrive early. Parking is limited and if you want to avoid long lines, the earlier the better, because later in the day be prepared to wait in some long lines, especially on weekends. But remember, this is not a day to feel rushed. It’s a place that reminds you to stop and admire the beauty of these flowers, whether or not it’s only for people to stop and admire on your Instagram.
