Conner’s Critique: Beavis & Butt-head’s New Series Complete Breakdown

The “Beavis & Butt-head” show was designed specifically for MTV with young adults and teenagers in mind. Over time it was proven to be a mistake, as multiple parties and parents brought issues of legal liabilities and people trying to get the show taken off the air.

At the time however there was no major drive for adult animation, for the most part. If there was an animated series it existed specifically for children or as a family program. The shows that come to mind, one of the longest running ones, is the Simpsons. You could even say Mike Judge’s unofficial successor to the series, King of the Hill.

Now that Beavis & Butt-head is returned to the world, it’s prior viewers are now adults. We got the chance to watch the entire new season of Beavis & Butt-head and we can’t wait to share our thoughts with you. As always our views are broken down by story, acting, and overall so let’s jump in!

Story 8/10

Recently we tried to rewatch the older episodes of Beavis & Butt-head but they felt off. They seemed to have been created for an entirely different person than the one I am now, even though I loved them then. I loved the show as a kid but I found the old episodes to be a little bit annoying, boring, and tedious upon rewatching as an adult.

This made me slightly worried before I completed my preview-review, you can find that article Here.

“… Mike Judge has also changed, like his viewers. The way he tells and crafts stories is so much more skilled now.”

However, upon watching a preview for the series, and later watching the rest of the season. I found that my fears were unfounded due to the fact that Mike Judge has also changed, like his viewers. The way he tells and crafts stories is so much more skilled now.

Each episode features two stories. The stories either focus on part or both of the duo.

For the most part these episodes are fully contained and don’t require any prior understanding of the series as a whole. More impressively each story has a beginning middle and end, and fully capable of holding the attention of an adult viewer.

Acting 9/10

The characters of Beavis and Butt-head are picked up perfectly where they were left off by Mike Judge. However, while they are constantly fighting and at their core awkward, they and the world they live in has not monumentally changed. However, the other people in their world, and even some of Beavis and Butt-head’s decisions are slightly more nuanced for a new world.

It’s a thin line to be able to take characters that are well established and update them for a new day and age without making it look like they were ever really even updated at all.

Regardless of how he did it, he has created a product that I can now watch as an adult, that is interesting without any issues of boredom or frustration at the story of the episodes.

This is done in part by the stories Judge decides to tell, as well as how the characters act.

Overall 8/10

When all of said and done, this series hits on childhood memories and nostalgia. The show was dark fun, and now it’s being brought to a modern time, made even more interesting and watchable by Mike Judge as he now fully accepts and addressing a more adult audience.

If you like adult animation, and we’re a fan of the series when you were younger, I highly recommend you check out the new season of beavis and butthead.
