Hey everyone! Remember in the 90’s and early 2000’s (of course the more mature audience) that we knew almost nothing about a film or the trailers were so vague that we were surprised by the movie? Well Buddy did that to me! I definitely tried researching and watching teasers but did not expect what I saw.
As always, we break down our reviews into the categories of story, acting, and overall. So let’s take aim and jump on it.
Story 8.5/10
The story here starts out very simple but becomes complex in a good way and has a slow build up to it. You can guess and see what will happen in certain aspects, but I love a slow burn and this was that. I did not expect the story to be what it was at all and my live reaction, along with the audience members said it all. I personally have never seen a story twist like this and I went in with certain expectations and the story made me feel like I took a breath of fresh air for the first time. The only thing with the story was that in the third act of the movie they seemed to rush a little bit and it got a little confusing with the outcome of certain things. That’s all I can say for now to not spoil the film, but the story is still way up there!
Acting 9/10
The acting in this film was awesome! There are times when cheesiness and a bit of overacting can really harm a performance, but the actors in this film did so well at selling it at the right times. We go from super happy, to serious and dramatic and the actors did very well. There are mostly child actors in this and they carried the movie so well. There are also voice actors that did a great job at portraying the puppets and characters in this. Wearing a costume or doing voiceover while showing emotion through tone is a talent and we had a lot of talent on this movie when you look up the actors in it. Everyone from the smallest roles to the main characters did phenomenal.
Overall 8.5/10
Your watching this thinking it’s a children’s movie, and it ramps up very quickly. Story was solid with a slow burn like I said which I love, we don’t see much of that anymore in todays shows and films. The acting as stated was also on point and I am always impressed with how child actors can carry a film as they do. I will be recommending this film to my friends for sure and will see it again with a bigger audience in theatres. It’s worth a watch and if you can keep from any teasers or trailers I would advice it heavily.
Conner’s Final Thoughts
As I said before, I have never seen a movie like this and it was so nice being surprised. It felt like the first time I saw an action movie or horror flick. The run time over around 90 minutes is classic and they fit everything in very well. However, I do wish we had an extra 15 minutes or so to elaborate on the climax and third act. Who knows though, maybe we get more Buddy? Check it out in theatres August 28, 2026 and remember…..IT’S BUDDY!
