In the field of kitchen tech, appliances keep getting smarter, but one specific field in the kitchen has not changed for quite some time.
During CES we sat down with Akshita Iyer, the CEO and Founder of Ome. She notes that she wasn’t really into appliances and the tech field. She even majored in neuroscience and was going to med school. However, her mother was diagnosed with Parkinsons and accidently left the range on and started a kitchen fire. That taught her that people with disabilities needed a solution.
When she looked to see if there was a solution, she learned that appliance manufacturers aren’t specifically tech manufacturers. Additionally, big items like ovens/ranges will last in a home typically for 15-20 years. So, when she looked at things like smart doorbells, and locks, she realized a lot of them were retrofit devices, so she thought what if the same could be done for stoves. Iyer even brought the Ome onto Shark Tank in 2021.
The Ome gives you full access to the range burner, taking a typically “dumb” device and turning it into a smart device with the use of an app, and allowing the ability to take a traditional device and bringing into a smart landscape.
Users of the range can take off their knob, then place the Ome device over the pin that the knob went over, and then using a device, tighten the new OME Smart Knob into place. With the use of the housing which adheres to the range, the Knob will be able to free spin, by direct intervention of the user, or be managed and adjusted by the application on the user’s phone.
When you set up the app, the knob or knobs will match the layout of your range. You can see the status of the burner in the application, and adjust it even further in the app.
There is an automatic shut off timer, which will automatically countdown once the range is turned on. The timer can be turned off for a day, for people with long cooks, but the timer also resets when you adjust the setting. You can also set your very own timer for a specific cook.
When it comes time to charge the device, you simply take off the very top part of the knob, you can charge that item and then return it to the range when done.
As I regularly stradle the line from having OCD, I know the feeling about worrying when the range has been left on. I don’t know yet if the app and smart device would rectify my nerves with regards to that phobia in the future just yet, I can say it is nice to know that my range will automatically shut off after a period of time, and that I can log in and check my range and their status at any time.
