Rochelle Brings Her Family To Segerstrom Arts Center For Disney’s Frozen!

The cold is bothering me a lot lately in SoCal but I am letting it go thanks to “Disney’s Frozen” now playing at the Segerstrom in Costa Mesa!

I’m always interested in the choices one makes to adapt movies or books to stage, and I will say I was quite impressed with these choices. Some of the lore from the sequel as well, like the mother’s Northuldra roots, are mentioned. I had wondered (and worried) how Act 2 would play out since in the movie there aren’t as many songs past the award-winning “Let it Go”. So while fans of the movie will be pleased to hear their favorite songs live, they will also get a more fleshed-out version of the story. Think of it as an extended cut of the original. Songs that didn’t make the cut due to children’s movies needing to stick to their approximate 90-minute count can now be heard. Favorite characters like Kristoff, Oaken, and even Hans get their own catchy tunes, and the backstories involving Elsa’s gifts and her strong desire to be a good sister to Anna is a warm welcome!

They keep the comedic one-liners current with jabs at recent royal affairs and the exaggerated sexual innuendos with Anna was more prevalent though not overdone to be more well-suited to adult audiences. The two actresses (child and adult) who portrayed Anna played the part impeccably, I might add!

The actors, the sets and backdrops, the costumes, and the special effects of Elsa’s ice magic are pretty remarkable, as are the choreography specifically during the last scene where Anna is rushing to Kristoff only to make a b-line to save her sister and become frozen. All-in-all you will feel like the ending gives you a nice warm hug. And though it is recommended for ages 6 and up, my 3 year old had a blast at her first ever Broadway show. So for you Broadway snobs out there reading this, yes, It certainly does hold its own amongst other Broadway heavyweights.

The Segerstrom Art Center itself is one of my favorite venues to watch live theatre. It feels upscale without feeling pretentious. Self-parking is $15, and you can also opt for valet. Get your tickets now while you can starting at $29 Here! It only here for a limited time, through February 19th!
