Movies For The Week Of March 15, 2024

The American Society of Magical Negros – Releasing in Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 35%

Aren, played by Justice Smith, is the newest of black people to be recruited into a secret society of magical black people who help people make the right choice and correct their course of life. When Aren begins to see the value of his powers, he begins to wonder if using them to help other people and be subservient is really that important of a calling.

The film is a satirical comedy film that pokes fun at the trope of the “magical negro” which was first named and criticized by Spike Lee. Now it’s taken to a whole new level with a comedy twist that seems like a more earnest try, but ultimately already commented upon in Not Another Teen Movie.

Arthur The King – Releasing in Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

As Michael Light, played by Mark Wahlberg, tries one last chance to win the Adventure Racing World Championship in the Dominican Republic, his journey is difficult, and it pushes him and his team to the limit. However along the ten day journey of over 435 miles, his new street dog companion, Arthur, teaches him what friendship and victory really is.

If you love heartbreaking dog stories, then this is one for your viewing pleasure. One of the worst things about films like this though, is sometimes they end with the dog dying. At this time, I cannot confirm or deny that is the case here.

Bad River – Releasing in Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

Showcasing the journey of the Wisconsin-based Bad River Band as they attempt to save and gain sovereignty over Lake Superior. Covering the journey throughout history all the way through to the present. The group feels so importantly about the largest freshwater resource in America that they are willing to die to protect it.

Water is becoming more and more of an issue, as the government regularly gives large resources of it away to corporations, and then those same corporations push to declare the vital element a commodity to trade on, it’s more and more important that we protect access to it. All of which is covered in this film. This documentary is made even better thanks to narration from Edward Norton and Quannah ChasingHorse.

French Girl – Releasing in Limited Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

When Gordon, played by Zach Braff, finds out his girlfriend has been offered a job back in her hometown of Quebec by her celebrity ex, he drops everything to follow her, with hopes to propose. However, in following her home, he finds himself trying to impress her French-speaking family.

It’s a light-hearted comedy but includes fish out of water elements. Braff’s comedy styling mixes well with the energy of this film to create a fun little adventure in Canada.

Prey – Releasing in Limited Theaters and Streaming
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

A Christian missionary post in Kalahari is rocked when a militant group threatens the couple running it, played by Ryan Phillippe and Mena Suvari. Their attempt to flee is cut short when their plan crashes in an animal preserve filled with dangerous animals. Now they must continue their escape from the extremists, while dodging the animals that see them as food.

A multi-layer thriller where the villains are not evil on one side, but can’t be negotiated with, and cruel and evil on the other. Plans to evade one wouldn’t work for the other, and vice versa. So, the group is really pressed to fight to survive. An interesting, and action-packed adventure.
