Nerd News Social – The Word of Preacher

The “Preacher” panelists include cast members Dominic Cooper (Jesse Custer), Ruth Negga (Tulip O’Hare) and Joseph Gilgun (Cassidy), along with Executive Producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Originally a comic book series created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillion, this is one of those epic stories that are so twisted and humorous someone was bound to make a TV series out of it.

Imagine if God “sinned” and abandoned Heaven with no one in charge. What did He do? Where would He go? Preacher is the story of Jesse Custer, a preacher in a small Texas town, who gets accidentally possessed by “Genesis”, a powerful infant creature who’s powers rival God Himself and who is the spawn of an unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon. Jesse, who now possesses the incredible powers of Genesis, has set out with his ex-girlfriend Tulip and a hard-drinking Irish vampire Cassidy, to find God and make him face what he’s done. There are many incredible obstacles and enemies the gang must overcome to complete this quest. The TV series is currently on its third season and it’s a must see and a must read!

The panel opened up with Joseph (Cassidy) cracking jokes at the crowd. He continued to be fun and humorous throughout the panel even with his cast mates Dominic and Ruth. Its almost like we are seeing his character Cassidy right before us. A special thing about the casting of particularly Dominic (Jesse Custer) and Ruth (Tulip O’Hare) is that in real life Dominic and Ruth used to date and their characters in the series, Jesse and Tulip, used to date as well. You can see in especially its current season 3; Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy care so much about each other that they have an incredible dynamic. But due to the obstacles they are facing this season they are really struggling to keep their friendship together. It’s very clear that each person selected to play these characters was spot on.

Later on in the panel Joseph opens up about being Bi-Polar. That season 2 was a tough year last year. He said there were moments in his career that he gets that way, that he honestly believes that he forgets how to act. He had trouble putting it into words, but he said it’s so real when it’s happening. He had to rely on the people around him. During the series he was in a hard place and since he’s opened up about his mental health he has gotten a lot of great feedback. He was very happy to share that he’s has been working on really taking care of himself and he’s in a good place this year, that this whole year has been amazing!

If you have read and loved the comic series as I have, you will notice in the TV series there are a few things out of order and there is an especially long period of time in Texas in season 1. This is because Seth and Evan are doing an incredible job of staying true to the key points of the comic series but is also going a lot deeper into the origins and connections of the characters. You will not get as much of this in the comic series, so watching the TV series gives you a more in depth connection with the overall story and with the individual characters.

The world of Preacher actually has a lot of comedy in it and Seth is the perfect person to take this twisted dark story and insane subject matter and keep it fun and exciting in his rendition. Be sure to check it out on AMC!
