We’re back once again to talk about the great show, Is It Cake. This year, they released a special short run for the holiday season. With that in mind, we jumped at the chance to once again talk about this uplifting and fun baking show.
As always, we break down our reviews by story, acting, and overall. So let’s jump on into Is It Cake Holiday!
Story 6/10
This section falls a little bit flat, as for throughout the season, it is pretty much holiday themed. A lot of the cake contests specifically are dedicated to Christmas themed items, and the update to cake or fake is incredibly fun and more fair when it comes to allowing the competitors to walk away with funds, even if they don’t win the contest at all.
I just feel like they probably could have done more to make it holiday themed. Sure Mikey Day dressed up in costumes, the set was dressed around Christmas time, and even some of the contestants tried to throw some of their holiday dish flair into their designs, but they missed an opportunity to make the judges all holiday themed, And even a lot of the items are being made with the cake by the contestants felt more like winter coded, than holiday coded.
Acting 10/10
It’s hard to talk about the topic of acting with this specific series because of the fact that this is not really an acted show. This is Reality TV. Although the concepts and ideas are massively scripted, there is a lot we can talk about here, like for instance, the actions and behaviors of the cast.
This season is considered an All-Stars run, with the return of many fan-loved characters and winners from prior seasons. Some of our most beloved returns was Jujhar Mann, Elizabeth Rowe “the Stitch Witch”, and Henderson Gonzalez. All of which showed not only their skill, but their dedication to the craft of baking. It’s also incredibly nice to see the their stories continued, and to get more insight on what’s going on in their lives since the last time they appeared on Is It Cake.
It seems pretty much every single person who was invited on the show are good people and incredibly supportive of their castmates when they’re were on the show the first time, and that did not change for this special edition of the series. Every single member is not only supportive, helpful, but also friendly and loving to their competitors. There was one specific moment, when one person messed up a project, one of the other contestents stopped working and literally walked over to hug and show support for their opposition.
We need more competitions like this in the world, and teach competitors in the field of Reality TV that to be on a show, you don’t have to be a bad boy, you can still win and be successful while also being incredibly friendly in supportive of your competitors.
Overall 7/10
At the end of the day, Is It Cake is still one of my family’s favorite viewing experiences, we sit down and binge it all the way to the end, and why not, it’s an incredibly fun, supportive and positive show to watch. If you like baking shows I highly recommend it that you watch. As for Is It Cake Holiday, maybe wait until after you’ve seen all three prior seasons.
Conner’s Final Thoughts
I know this section is normally saved for final thoughts about the series as a whole, but I wonder if just like Aaron Paul has to deal with people yelling at him “Science Bitch!” if Mikey Day now has to deal with people walking by and yelling, “Is It CAKE?!” It’s great being able to see this man show off his comedy chops during SNL, and then put on this incredibly friendly and positive demeanor to host this show.
