Grass Monkey, that funky monkey! – January Community Day

  • From Community Day onward Rillaboom can learn the special attack Drum Beating.
  • So, without further monkeying around, let’s take a look at the Chimp Pokemon, Grookey!

    Spotlight on Grookey

So, I get that Pokemon is fictional. I do. These are not one-to-one adaptations of real animals. But why, oh why, name this Pokemon the Chimp Pokemon when it clearly has a tail!?

Minor gripes aside, this was the starter I picked when first playing Sword and Shield, in no small part inspired by this article and the fact that Chimchar was the Community Day Pokemon literally the day prior to the Generation 8 release! I guess it was just a monkey themed weekend for me! (Or, more specifically, I was going ape.) I remember signing posts with #GrookeyGang back in the day! Ah, 2019… a much simpler time.

There’s precious little Pokedex info for us to parse, though; it bangs things with the stick it carries and the resulting rhythm is good for plants in the nearby area – it’s often been said that singing to your plants can make them grow better, so, I guess this is a take on that idea. The stick it carries grows in strength and flexibility as Grookey grows too.

Thwackey gets even less information of a specific nature – it continues to belt out percussive tunes with its hair-sticks and can get so involved with this process that it looses track of both the status of its opponent and the commands of its trainer.

Rillaboom is, likewise, ver committed to its drumming. Those sticks have become a full-on tree stump with controllable roots that follow the commands laid out by Rillaboom’s feverish beating. They are gentle giants, preferring to settle territorial disputes with heated musical face-offs rather than literal tearing off of faces, and those with the best musical technique tend to win the day more often than not!

But can they beat their opponents in Pokemon GO the same way they beat their drum!?

With a Mac CP of 3758, Attack of 239, Defense of 168 and Stamina of 225, it’s a solid pure Grass Type. It’s better than most other Grass Type options with the exception of Legendaries, Ultra Beasts, Shadow and Mega Pokemon making it a very accessible option for powering up and using in Gym battles and Raids and the like.

As a pure Grass Type it has weaknesses to Ice, Fire, Flying, Bug and Poison Type attacks, with resistances to Grass, Electric, Ground and Water Type attacks.

In terms of fast attacks you have Scratch and Razor Leaf, the latter of which is STAB. Charged Attacks are Earth Power, Energy Ball and Grass Knot, the latter two of which are STAB. Razor Leaf and Grass Knot are a great combo but it goes without saying that Frenzy Plant will be the better option after Community Day. Drum Beating offers additional utility in PvP by lowering your opponents Attack by one stage.

Shiny Grookey is a bright gold color rather than the standard lime green, so, nice and easy to spot!

As always, Trainers, I wish you the absolute best of luck out there! Stay safe, be kind, have fun and catch ’em all!
