Sabrina History and Witchy Comic Recs

One of the most famous witches of the entertainment world is Sabrina. There has been so many renditions of this witch, but it originated October of 1962 in the comic Archie’s Madhouse #22. We all know her as the “teenage witch” but originally, she was only in elementary school and was under the title “Sabrina — That Cute Little Witch”. With regular appearances in the comic series Archie’s TV Laugh-Out which started in 1969, she got her first comic volume named Sabrina The Teenage Witch published in 1971. And from there, she just took off in various forms including a manga inspired version, many mini series, product, and most recently the Netflix ongoing series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Since Part 3 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina just launched. Let’s talk a little bit about witches and I’ll recommend my very bias favorite witch comics.

We have seen many forms of witches throughout history. Cute ones like Sabrina, and more traditional ones like the evil queen transforms into from Disney’s Snow White. So it’s safe to say, witches can take many forms or use their powers to shape shift.

So what is a witch? Plainly, they are “people who practiced witchcraft, using magic spells and calling upon spirits for help or to bring about change”. Most witches were thought to be pagans doing the Devil’s work. Many, however, were simply natural healers or so-called “wise women” whose choice of profession was misunderstood.

One of the earliest records of a witch is in the Bible in the book of 1 Samuel, thought be written between 931 B.C. and 721 B.C. It tells the story of when King Saul sought the Witch of Endor to summon the dead prophet Samuel’s spirit to help him defeat the Philistine army.

So without further ado, here is a list of my very bias favorite witch related comics.
