Mediterranean Sea To Provide Rare Sunset Eclipse

Experts believe that cruise ships positioned off Spain, such as Holland America’s Oosterdam will get the chance to experience and see a very rare experience, in the form of a solar eclipse during a sunset.

Specifically on August 12, 2026, a solar eclipse will occur at a vantage point off the coast of Spain, and the eclipse will be in position low on the horizon during the path of totality, creating a rare “so-called” sunset eclipse.

Holland America’s Oosterdam will be positioning for eclipse viewing as part of their 13-day cruise departing Lisbon, Portugal, on August 9, 2026, and tickets for the experience are still open for booking. The cruise will run from August 9, 2026 through August 22, 2026 and includes ports in Alicante, Spain, positioning off the Spanish coast for the eclipse, then continuing on to Barcelona, Port-Vendres, Marseille, Monte Carlo, Florence, Livorno, Rome, Naples, Messina, and Civitavecchia.

The ship even plans to have onboard programming designed around the eclipse, including themed food and beverage offerings, dedicated viewing areas and a presentations led by Dr. Adam Burgasser, professor at UC San Diego and seasoned eclipse expert who previously sailed aboard Koningsdam during the eclipse of 2024.

The ship has planned lectures and Q&A sessions in the days leading up to the event, as well as live commentary during totality.
