Nerd News Social Sits Down With the Stars of “The Venture Bros”

We all loved our childhood shows. What if someone took these favorite shows and made them for adults? Welcome to The Venture Bros! One of the most creative and fun adult cartoon series on TV! The show started in 2006 on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim which stars re-imaginings of the characters from Johnny Quest, various comic book superheroes and super-villains, and of other famous figures from popular culture with a weird, adult, and hilarious twist. The Venture Bros is one of those series where it’s filled with so many unique characters and interesting story-lines that it can go on forever!

We sat down with voice actors James Urbaniak and Michael Sinterniklaas and got to ask all the important questions about new themes, favorite lines, and everything else we could think of. Go team Venture!

Question: So in the early beginnings of the show, back in 2006, the big picture of the overall show is failure. So in 2013, it was discussed that you were moving away from that, into the successes of the character. Can you talk about this transition in theme, and if there are any new themes in these next two seasons that we can expect?

James Urbaniak (Dr. Venture): I don’t know so much if the characters are succeeding so much as they are sustaining themselves. In the new season, my character Dr. Venture is now wealthy, he has inherited money from his now deceased brother, and he actually comes close in the new season to creating some scientific breakthroughs, but in the tradition of the shows he always is upended and thwarted by his family, and friends… and enemies.

Michael Sinterniklaas (Dean Venture): Dean certainly has moved past, failing to remain alive. That’s a big step. Now it’s all or nothing for poor Dean. He doesn’t have any more backup clones. I do think it’s interesting to see how Dean has matured, and the evolution of him being true to himself. I’m excited to see how it goes having just recorded it and not having seen completed episodes. What happens to Dean now in college, and truly living up to being his father’s son.

James: The boys are maturing and expanding.

Question: Do we have a hiatus in the show, or will it just pick up where it left off?

James: I think Jackson has said, that the first episode is the equivilent of the finale to last season.

Question: How do you think Dr. Venture will react to the creation of a Rusty Venture tv show happening in the world of the Venture Bros.

James: I think he would insist on doing the voice of Rusty Venture. He would have a hard time dealing with the rejection of that, which would be innevitable.

Michael: Dean would probably get it.

James: Then all he would do is give notes. Stop doing that, you’re not doing it right!.

Question: Dean is finding his place in life, can you hint at the direction he is taking?

Michael: The sense that I get, from the work that I’ve done, is that he is trying to find his place in the real world. Weirdly, as a Venture he comes from privilege, where in the middle there was a lot of success, or not a lot of success and affluence. But now there is that sweet place in Columbus Circle. As he is trying to find his own way, he is trying to normalize. That is really hard for someone who has had to deal with the existential angst of knowing he is not a real boy. So normalcy is kind of a big thing for Dean, and the world keeps going haywire around him.

Question: There are rumors and speculations, as to who the mother is for Dean. I was wondering if you were planning on dropping more hints in the next two seasons, and how do you plan on going about making the fans know?

Michael: I don’t know who the mother is, or sample, or donor… Do you know who the lucky lady is?

James: I just know the ambeguity of the show, a flavor of the show.

Question: In this upcoming season, was there anything that happened that shocked or suprised you?

Michael: The big shock for me was Dean cussing in season 2 or 3. He had not to much earlier said “Do you know how many baby angels are killed by saying that!” then for him to go full f-bomb on that episode with the burning crucifix… The cussing out of his true love’s mom…

James: My feeling about this is related to that, which is the idea of them maturing in a sense, even though they are still living in the apartment with Dr. Venture, they are moving on with their lives. Dean is going to college, and Hank is working and going on dates. I think that gives Dr. Venture a little more energy and a little more freedom. I remember reading those scripts where Dean and Hank are out in the world, where they weren’t before, being controlled by their dad. I remember thinking, wow these are characters that change, as opposed to shows where the characters just never age.

Question: Are there any lines that stuck with you and made you laugh?

James: Yes. There is a line from the new season trailer, where Dr. Venture is planning on a date. He has discovered that there is a woman who is a notorious black widow, who marries rich men, and they all die. He figures that it’s a good way to have sex with someone, because he is wealthy. All he has to do is not die. There is this pitch of an idea, and Hank and Dean are there saying, “You really shouldn’t do this…” Then he gives a litany of lines about how he is a loser and so pathetic, and this is finally an opportunity to have sex. Then Hank says, “You know he makes a good point…” That line gets me.

Question: How would you like to see your characters in the future.

James: This is speculative, because we don’t right the show… but I don’t know, a little Sopranos ambiguity. Is it over? Or are they going to keep going on.

Michael: I don’t think Dean would do this, but Dean becoming his father and having his own science empire. Maybe being able to clone himself and raise his own Dean spawn, maybe make it right this time.

Question: The boys are gone, but Brock is still there. Will you guys be palling around a bit more?

James: The old dynamic is back. Brock is there but he is more on the side of the people trying to prevent Dr. Venture from screwing everything up. He is less a bodyguard and more of a babysitter.

Get ready for seasons 7 and 8 which will each contain 10 jam packed episodes starting August 5th on Adult Swim.
