Nerd Taste of Hawaii: Ocean Vodka Organic Farm and Distillery

If you’ve been to a Costco, or a Bevmo, then you probably have heard of Ocean Vodka. Their stylized sea glass design with the spout positioned just askew stands out in consumers eyes. But that’s not all, it’s taste makes consumers return to their spirit.

Well if you happen to be travelling to Maui in the near future, I’d highly recommend stopping by the Ocean Vodka Organic Farm and Distillery in Kula, HI. It’s actually a stones throw from another favorite location of ours, and that’s the Surfing Goat Dairy.

While at the Distillery, you have some pretty amazing options. For one, you can buy some amazing alcohol there, taking something home to the mainland that you can’t get no matter how hard you try when you get back. You can also show your support by purchasing some specific gear that reps the company. If anything it would be an awesome way to casually start a conversation about your favorite alcohol company.

Lastly though, you could take the amazing Distillery tour.

For $15 (at the time of this article), you can get a guided tour that talks about the history of the company, shows you their amazing sugar cane, they even have multiple types of sugar cane to show you the difference.

You will also be shown a little of the 80-acre organic farm grounds, and have explained what goes into the making of their amazing spirits, which all start with a simple collection of just their organicly grown sugar cane, yeast, and deep ocean water.

While the area of the farm doesn’t have the most rainfall, averaging only two feet a year, the farm takes advantage of an intricate water system, and a vast water well, to deliver the much needed hydration to these delicious sugar cane.

Then you are taken inside of their solar-power assisted warehouse. Now they don’t allow people to photograph within the warehouse, so we you are going to have to take our word for this part, but on the shelves are tons of boxes of their amazing liquors. It’s hard not to just grab a box and run for it! (We kid, don’t do that!) At the end of the warehouse tour they show you their bottling room, and how they use the assembly line, and hard working staff to bottle all of their delicious spirits.

Once outside the warehouse though, you are taken to the tasting area, which is beautiful, open air, guided by an expert, and everything perfect about Hawaii. There you will be able to taste their different options, all included with the price of the tour. First off, we’ve talked about Ocean Vodka, which duh. However, did you know that they also make rum? Well they have now for quite some time.

We’ve personally always been a fan, back when it was called Deep Island Rum. But time changes and it’s time to go global. They’ve rebranded the Rum as Kula Rum. Kula is taken from the area where it is made, in tribute to the beautiful soil that makes this rum possible. So hopefully by the end of the year you will be able to find Kula Rum in all 50 states. Currently though it’s only available in about 5 states. Check with your local BevMo! and Total Wine to see if you are able to get a hold of a bottle.

Kula Rum comes in three different flavors, which already has it beat over it’s predecessor, Deep Island. It comes in Dark, Toasted Coconut, and Oceanic Oceanic being the same as the original Deep Island Rum). All of these flavors are amazing, and when ever we want to head back to Hawaii, and can’t, we open up our Rum.

Oceanic Gin which was just launched last week, and is unique and amazing. Made with notes of lime, lavender, and ginger. Not the traditional taste of Gin, as the notes of lavender pulls a pleasent after taste.

Lastly though, and for the cost of a $10 upgrade, you can (while supplies last) sample their new and limited Brum whiskey barrel aged rum. This small batch rum is blended with other world class rums to make an amazing and unique taste that you can only find in one place, sold only at their Distillery, for $150.00 and only available until they run out.
