October 1st is National Escape Room Day, so to celebrate we went to Exit Game OC in Anaheim.
They currently have one room, “13th Basement”, with 2 more on the way. If you’ve done a lot of escape rooms before, this one pays homage to the classic horror escape rooms, poking fun at itself in a “Saw”-like movie fashion. The story: An escape room enthusiast has created a room for us to solve, but he’s very strict about the rules: if you break his rules or don’t get out in time, you will belong to him, an insane serial killer. In true horror escape room fashion you will be blindfolded and separated from your group so in order for you all to survive. Communication is key. While there are some jump scares and certain thematic horror elements, the puzzles are all very clever and they use more than just typical physical locks that open or solve clues.
This was our first escape room experience since the pandemic, and it took us back to familiar puzzles and themes but felt fresh and exciting, not to mention got our hearts racing. The room is great for both experienced players and newbies.
Built by Hollywood professionals, this immersive experience combines state of the art technology and room durability into the puzzles themselves woven into a fluid story. The combination is quite impressive in more ways than one and even though the theme is dark there is an ability to laugh at itself which only adds to the fun! Victoria was a great host and took photos of us in the room. They encourage you to take photos and videos inside which is something most escape rooms don’t allow as part of the rules. (Note: They can also send you video footage if you request it.)
I’m also a big fan of the fact that they are so supportive of the community, cross-promoting other rooms around town. And if you’re in town Oct 1st check out National Escape Room Day at Stereo Brewing Company in Placentia from 3-8pm. There will be free mini games, trivia, and raffle prizes, and a panel going up at 4pm.
