Sherlock co-creators hosted a Tumblr Answer Time

The creators of Sherlock sat down and proceeded to answer some of Tumblr most pressing questions.

Q: What is your favorite character trait of Sherlock?

SM: He always says the exact words we write down for him, More people should do that.

Q: Do you have a new favorite character in the series?

MG: Toby Jones plays this year’s big baddie. It’s a brilliant performance. Funny and chilling. We can’t wait for everyone to see it.

Q: Do you prefer tea or coffee?

SM: Coffee. Mark handles the tea.

Q: Why are there so many elephants?

MG: Are there a lot of elephants? Do you mean in the world? I think they’re endangered, like giraffes, which have suddenly become endangered. I think perhaps we should have more giraffes in Sherlock. That’ll save them.

Q: Did “Sherlock” change your lives in any way? If so, how?

SM: We all know how special this is. Shows like this hardly ever happen, and you could have a perfectly successful, happy career without anything on this scale. So we are grateful and a bit astonished. Can’t say how it changed my life, except that it definitely made it better.

Q: Would you consider yourselves nerds?

MG: Yes. Proud nerds, but nerds who have actually made a career of the things they love. We’re all nerds about something. The trick is to embrace that and try to make something for other people to be nerds about.

Q: Did you ever have writer’s block and if so how did you get past it?

MG: Yes, sort of. Writing can be very hard. I usually take a long, hot bath if I get stuck, but often the moment that makes the difference arrives when you’re thinking about something entirely different.

Q: What is the Sherlock script of which you are most proud of and why?

SM: Normally I answer A Scandal In Belgravia, which I kind of think is the best thing I’ve ever written. But The Final Problem (co-written with Mark) might be edging ahead. Let’s see what you all think …

Q: Who is Sherlock saying “I love you” to in the trailer?

MG: His mum, obviously. He doesn’t ring home often enough and usually forgets her birthday. He’s a very naughty boy.

Q: Does Benedict have any strange habits or food preferences that you are willing to share?

MG: Yes. It’s a little known fact that Benedict can only eat ghosts, which he lightly fries between scenes.

Q: Are you completely against the idea of Sherlock having a relationship with John? If so, what are your reasons?

MG: Of course we’re not against it. But as we have explained many times, that’s not the story that we want to tell. Obviously as a gay man myself, I have no problem with the notion that a Sherlock Holmes and a Doctor Watson could be in a relationship together, but ours aren’t. It’s as simple as that. Sherlock is clearly capable of feeling emotion and of falling for someone, but that someone is not John Watson, despite his love and great affection for him.

Q: Do you think you will make any more special episodes, like you did with the victorian christmas special? I would love to see more.

MG: It depends on what we do next. Steven and I joked about doing a black and white episode set in the 40s where they fight the Nazis. It’s unlikely, but you never know.

At this current time there is still no news on whether or not Sherlock will return for another season. However it appears that there is some interest in it at least to some degree from the creators and some of the characters are contracted for at lease another season.

The main difficulty of the show is that it was so popular, with the main cast spring forward to tons of projects from it. Martin Freeman, who is by no means a new actor prior has been cast in a multitude of things including his recent commitments to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Benedict Cumberbatch can’t stop working with people still fawning over him.

The one major setback that would likely hold the show back from a new season would have to probably be the fact that this season was one of the lowest in regards to ratings. In addition there was a minor spat and anger over the treatment of one of the sub characters in the show with the actor and the creator disagreeing on how they would proceed forward after the exchange between her and Sherlock. (No spoilers here!)

That being said, I want more. I know an army of fans want more. So lets hope they agree in the end, and faster then five years.
