Sony Just Announced the Playstation 5 and I’m SO EXCITED!

Don’t worry, kids! The PS4 still has a few years left before it’s retired, and the PS5 is boasting a great backwards compatibility platform.

Keeping a consistent theme of 10 years between consoles, Sony announced the release date for the PS5 will be sometime in 2020, with the mention that the PS4 will stick around for at least three more years. The PS4’s initial release was in November of 2013, so that’s pretty on point with Sony’s M.O. around consoles.

Brave as always, Sony’s been generous with the console details. This allows us gamers to get a much appreciated insight into what we can look forward to, but also allows for the competition to get a leg up on Sony’s platform (just like last time)!

So how powerful will this thing be? During a company strategy meeting, Sony showed off the superior graphics rendering process that rivals even top-tier PC rigs. The PS5 was able to load a full 3D cityscape in less than a second, leaving its predecessor in the dust. You can expect to see 8k graphics, a SSD, 3D audio, disc support for your PS4 games, and an upgraded CPU and GPU.

While SIE hasn’t discussed games specifically, they’re supposed to have a lineup ready to go at launch, with sequels to some already popular exclusive titles, as well as backwards compatibility with the PS4.

So what do they mean by backwards compatibility? Because the last time that word was thrown around by a gaming tech giant, it was a total joke. Well, Jim Ryan stated that one of the biggest benefits of the PS5 to our gaming community would not only be backwards compatibility, but also cross-play with the older gen console. So that means you can play CoD on your new PS5 in the same game as your buddy on his PS4. If this is executed correctly, it could be HUGE for Sony and really give them a leg-up on Microsoft’s next gen console.

One of the biggest things stressed during this announcement was the phrase “anytime, anywhere, without disconnections.” This is likely to mean that Sony’s gaming platform will be heavy on streaming. This bodes well for those who are tired of taking up a ton of space in their home with game discs, but it does potentially complicate things like ownership down the line. This was one of the issues that was brought up during the Xbox post.

There were a lot of things that were discussed at this meeting, but the things that were not discussed were cost, an exact release date, what titles will launch alongside the PS5, and country rollout. Hopefully we’ll find the answers to these questions soon, but unfortunately Sony will not be announcing these things at E3 this year as they will not be attending.
