Spotlight on Scorbunny
Scorbunny is the fire type Starter (Or I guess to use the canon term, first partner Pokemon.) from the much maligned Generation 8. 2019 was a far simpler time, wasn’t it? When all we really had to worry about was Dexit and those Nintendo64 looking trees in the wild area… little did we know what the next few years would have in store for us.
Initially I was going to pick Scorbunny because I almost always pick the Fire Type… but then I went with Grookey and never looked back.
Scorbunny’s design is meant to look like a little kid who wants to play football. (The beautiful game, not gridiron.) It kicks flaming pebbles, constantly bounces up and down like it’s either too excited to sit still or is awaiting a ball to dribble. There’s a patch of yellow on his nose meant to evoke the idea of a little kid with a scrape on his face, covered with a band-aid. It’s adorable… but #GrookeyGang for life!
The Pokedex gives us precious little information as this is a newer entry into the world of Pokemon. It essentially says that it runs to generate heat on its foot pads. Once those are up to temperature it can unleash its full football-themed fury in battle.

I love evolutionary families that tell a story. Raboot is a middle stage that shows a clear progression from the former part of the line. No longer is this an exuberant little kid looking to play! No, it’s a surly teenager, hunkering down into the cuff of its sweater and giving you the side eye. Does it still play football? Of course it does! Does it want you to know that it loves playing football? Not on your life!

And then we have the final stage – a professional level footballer in a snazzy uniform and with all of Scorbunny’s energy focused into a serious style of play. The Pokedex tells us that Cinderace can be a little showy, getting itself into predicaments when it spends too much time flaunting its skills, but if it trusts its trainer, it will fight valiantly. It dribbles a pebble with those big feet until the thing turns into a flaming soccer ball which it can launch at foes.
But can it score a GO-al in Pokemon GO?
Spotlight on Cinderace
With a Max CP of 3412, 238 Attack, Defense of 163 and a Stamina of 190, it’s a tad-bit on the frail side but can deliver some fantastic damage. It’s outshone by a few other pure fire type options like Magmortar and Arcanine (Though, that latter one just barely.) but with the Community Day move added into the mix? Not a bad option!
It’s a pure fire type so it’s weak to ground, rock, and water type moves, and strong against bug, fairy, fire, grass, ice, and steel type moves.
In terms of Fast Attacks, you have tackle and fire spin, the latter of which being Stab. For Charged Attacks you get focus blast, flamethrower, flare charge, and pyro ball, the last three of which being Stab. The Community Day option of Blast Burn is also available if you evolve your Raboot to Cinderace before 9pm on March 14, 2026.
Shiny Scorbunny is incredibly noticeable, as the ears, feet, and collar of Scorbunny are a golden hue, as opposed to its traditional burnt orange color.
As always, Trainers, I wish you the absolute best of luck. Enjoy those spring breezes and have fun out there!
