Nerd News Social Sits Down With the Stars and the Writer of “Marvel’s Iron Fist”

Are you excited for season two of Marvel’s Iron Fist? We are. If the trailers are any indication, they’ve changed course, and this is the Iron Fist we’ve been looking forward to. Prepare yourself for action, and a little bit of lighthearted Danny Rand.

Finn Jones (Danny Rand/Iron Fist): How’s your morning gone so far?

Question: Good, thank you.

Finn: When did you guys get down to the con? Have you guys been here for a while?

Question: I got here at the wee early hours of Thursday.

Finn: I got here on Tuesday. It’s kinda nice coming in, cause you get to see the place be built up, and it’s relatively quiet. You can walk around and not feel too “Comic-Coned”

Question: Coming from filming?

Finn: No we actually finished filming two months ago. I’m still in New York. I live there now. I just went to LA for a bit to see some friends, and then I drove down. I was hoping the drive would be more scenic but it wasn’t.

M. Raven Metzner (Writer): The train is super scenic. My favorite place to write is on that train. It’s like three hours, uninterrupted. Beautiful scenery.

Finn: And it goes along the coast?

Raven: Beautiful ocean.

Finn: Oh! We have to have a train fight.

Raven: We should have a train fight. We should.

Raven: We should just take the train back together and fight.

Finn: Lets do it!

Question: Aren’t you setting up big expectations for season 3?

Finn: I know, I was thinking about it last night, how are we going to top it?

Raven: Oh no! I used every idea I had…

Question: Did you use your experiences from season one, as a basis for structuring season two?

Raven: I was not around for season one. I am new to the marvel family. I come from a nerd concentric world. I have a lot of comic books. I love the character. I was excited about the opportunity when I sat down with Marvel for the first time. I heard that there was this job available, and I wanted to tell an Iron Fist story, that I wanted to tell. In between season one, there has been the Defenders and Luke Cage season two. I had the opportunity to tell the story that I wanted to tell. So we left off from where the Defenders ended, but it was a chance to do something that I wanted to do since I was five years old. But it is an evolution from season one.

Finn: We are very forward thinking guys. We see where the show is headed, and we commit to it. From my prospective, where my head was at, is that I wanted to come into season two with 110% of my energy and give the best version of Danny Rand that I could, and my mind was on the prize. That was the only thing I was racing with. Luckily Raven came aboard and we had the same kind of ethos. We were surrounded with a great group of people this season who had the same kind of ethos as well. It was kind of a really productive and fun season two.

Raven: We’ve been talking about this the past couple days, but it’s a little bit of kismet. We actually met at San Diego Comic-Con…

Finn: Oh yeah! Tell the story! Yeah this is amazing! This time last year, we… what party was it?

Raven: Nerd HQ, we didn’t know each other. We never met.

Finn: I was there by myself, and I see this kid playing Mortal Kombat.

Raven: Yeah, Mortal Kombat on this old school arcade.

Finn: I see it and say, “Oh man, I’m gonna play Mortal Kombat,” because I love Mortal Kombat. So I start playing Mortal Kombat with this kid, and he annihilates me. Like absolutely annihilates me. So I’m like… oh all right.

Raven: So then, turns out this kid is my son. So my son comes over and says, “I was just playing Mortal Kombat with this dude, I totally annihilated him, but he was really cool and I had so much fun, this place is awesome.” Then I look over and go, oh that’s Finn Jones. So I come over, Hey Finn, I’m Ryan, this is my son, and they look at each other and say, “We just played Mortal Kombat together…” So we started in Kung Fu, with a familiar connection. So we just spent two hours that night talking.

Finn: Just talking and talking.

Raven: We were walking the streets of San Diego as things were closing down, and quieting down, and we looked up and there was a huge banner for Defenders with Finn up there. We were like, imagine if next year there was a huge Iron Fist season two banner up there, wouldn’t that be awesome? It was at that moment we realized we are just going to do this.

Finn: And it just felt right. You know when things just come together? It was one of those moments, it was super exciting.

Raven: It’s been a really positive experience.

Question: After Defenders, and being Luke Cage season two, how does Danny see himself with heroes all around him?

Finn: Danny, at the end of Defenders, the last thing that Matty told him was that he wanted Danny to protect his city. As we see in Luke Cage, he is protecting downtown, and Luke is protecting uptown. So when we Danny first in season two, he is taking that responsibility very seriously. He is on the streets, protecting the streets of downtown New York, while having just moved in with Colleen, his girlfriend. He is kinda in that moment when he is in his early twenties, and he has this new job, and moving in with his girlfriend for the first time, and everything is kind of finding it’s balance. With that though, comes new types of challenges. I think it’s totally relate able, and Danny is in a totally relate able place because of it.

Question: Are we going to get the Heroes for Hire story-line in this upcoming season?

Finn: Well, Mike isn’t in season two. I wish he was. I love working with Mike, I hope to see more Heroes for Hire in the future. I think it’s a great paring, I think Heroes for Hire and Daughters of the Dragon are gold. So hopefully that will happen later down the line. Right now we are focusing on a true Iron Fist story.

Raven: Having Misty Knight with us, keeps the show, like all the other Marvel properties, all interconnected.

Question: The trailer was very action oriented, are we going to see a very action oriented season two?

Raven: I think we also evolved the action. We’ve got this amazing stunt choreographer, Clayton Barber, and also all of our cast really just went for it. They pushed themselves. Finn really went to a place where he had months of week-long sessions before the season to really hone his skills. Not just in fighting, but also in stunt work, and it was a really powerful experience. The action is evolved, but it’s not just there. The character stories as well. We dove deeper into characters, deeper into relationships. I’m really proud of the dramatic stance of the show. I think everyone is going to be excited about it. That’s the thing about these Netflix shows, and Marvel Universe as well, is that there is this action, the super hero element, and these really well grounded characters.

Finn: As you’ve put it before, in every fight this season there will have a reason. They’ll have an emotional standpoint, driving the story forward. There is no fight that’s just for the sake of “Lets get these two people together to fight.” It’s all about driving the narrative and driving the characterization. For an actor that’s great. Not only are you doing these awesome fight scenes but also you working on the story at the same time.

Question: One of the things that stood out to me in the trailer was K’un-Lun, which we didn’t get to see a lot of in season one…

Finn: Yes.

Question: Can you talk a little about why it was so important to bring K’un-Lun, and how is Danny in the past?

Finn: That scene was gorgeous by the way, and it was the first time I saw it yesterday. Seeing it on that screen with the sound effects, and everything… Hats off to everyone involved. I was just blown away.

Raven: Yeah, and I think also it goes back to what we said before. Grounding character work in motion. If you are going to tell a story about Danny and Davos in the present day, to me, you want to balance that with what their relationship was in the past. In order to do that, you have to go to K’un-Lun. I think the way we chose to do it, is different then in season one. I’m really kinda of excited.

Finn: To be able to go back there, and see K’un-Lun, it really makes you see where the characters are coming from in this season.
Question: Were there any tonal or stylistic changes you were going for compared to season one?

Raven: I don’t like to compare things. I think in season two, we took a holistic approach to creating a season of television that has a real feel. We wanted it to feel like it was on the streets of New York. In that way the world of the show is a little different. That’s a big scene change comparatively. We aren’t in the Rand Corporation, we are on the streets of New York. We brought a really talented DP, Niels Alpert, who is fantastic. It’s all about the medium and collaboration. It’s all about the through and through. Our DP learned about action from our stunt coordinator, and vise versa. Working with the actors and their relationships, its interesting and new.

Question: Colleen Wing’s character was introduced to the show, and had her world turned upside down. She had to regain a sense of herself. You see a lot of that in season two of Luke Cage, as she is trying to help Misty Knight regain her footing. Are we going to see the character still going through that?

Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing): No she is definitely still going through it. I think she was floundering in the same way that she helped Misty.

Question: Are we going to get any more Misty and Colleen side stories?

Jessica: That was cool right? Yes, definitely!

Iron Fist Season Two dropped today on Netflix! Are you watching?
