SDCC 2019 – Stan Lee Alliances: A Trick Of Light

As we all know this is the first year in a long time that we have not had the iconic, charismatic, and ever so influential Stan Lee at Comic Con in a long time. But strangely enough, today, I heard him say his ever so known catchphrase, “excelsior!” Now I know what you are thinking, Lindsay… he no longer in this world, what is wrong with you? Well, lots of things, but just hear me out.

Today the NNS team was invited to an Audible experience featuring the book “A Trick of Light” by Stan Lee available now. For those of you who may not know this book, here is a synopsis:

A Trick of Light is a superhero origin story about the unlikely friendship between Cameron, a gifted young man struggling with newfound fame after a freak accident gives him the ability to manipulate technology with his mind, and Nia, a hacker and coding genius with a mysterious past.

At the event, while we were waiting for our media appointment, Audible was giving out free temporary tattoos. Turns out this tattoo we got, was actually in the shape of a wavelength and when scanned with a particular app, we could hear Lee saying…. Excelsior! This was kind of an emotional shock, but nothing compared to what we experienced next.

Upon entering the experience, we were in a large room with mirrors. Audio from the book started playing and accompanying lights and effects were on the walls and reflecting on the mirrors in the room! The lights then gestured us into the next room. It was a labyrinth. One that had long thin bands like rubber jail bars forming the sections of the labyrinth. Inside you could step on various platforms to activate more cryptic clips from the audio book. There was even weird computer coding and strange portal lights on the walls.

Once we experienced all the sound bytes, we were given a weird visor, which I can only assume either has something to do with the book. Or to keep out any tricks of light. And lastly, we hear Stan Lee talking to us as we leave the building. A familiar and comforting voice, one that I’m glad to hear again. Excelsior!
