Vincent Van Gogh is one of the greatest artists of all time, and this immersive art exhibit in Montebello raises his talent to another level.
Like the other art exhibits in this space before it, the visionaries behind this project magnify the artist’s work in a new and brilliant manner. They use 3d-mapping, 360 degree digital projections, life-size reproductions, and VR. As you walk in, a giant sculpture of his bust seems to dance with the colors of the digital mapping over it. On the reverse side is a vase on display much in the same fashion to show off his many different flowers in “Vases.” One of my favorites is the Sunflowers, and you can surely see his many iterations of those here too.
In the next room is a life size set from “Bedroom in Arles”, which is a fun backdrop for photos. Many of his influences, namely Japonisme, takes a center stage here. From Woodblock prints and Hokkusai, it’s amazing to see his inspirations displayed in 360 degrees. I myself felt inspired to create art of my own, and it also left me feeling a peace and tranquility. In the next big room is an even grander 360-degree digital experience. From self portraits to his Irises and Starry Night, it’s a visual delight to take in as the pictures dance before you, even on the floor, seemingly dancing to the epic soundtrack.
Visitors can learn a lot about the artist and the tragedy that befell him. Van Gogh was as haunted as he was talented. And he was more of a poet than I had known, his thoughts from pen to paper the vessel to his beautiful articulate mind. Some of my favorites include: “I am not an adventurer by choice but by fate.” “What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything.”
Visitors also get a chance to be fully immersed in his art with a VR experience (included with VIP!) and guests may also create their own art in much the same fashion as the other exhibits within these Montebello walls. And of course there’s a gift shop at the conclusion of your tour, where ViP can choose a poster to take home with them.
