Spotlight on Nickit
I’m going to use this opportunity to say that I still love Generation 8s Pokedex. In the early routes you have a posse of Pokemon who are so unmistakeably British that you’d be an absolute nutter to deny it, Guv. Welsh corgis, sheep, foxes, chickidees, badgers, tortoises, ladybugs… or at least, their larvae – all the sorts of creatures you’d expect to see in a story set in the British countryside. It’s not quite Animals of Farthing Wood, but you get the idea.
Nickit is a cute little fellow designed to showcase a couple of concepts. The sneaky fox prone to stealing food being primary among them. But there’s also the chimney sweep concept visible in its broom-like tail, black at the end and used for sweeping away its own pawprints. Something about that black fur, though, reminds me of the coal and soot covered brushes employed by 18th and 19th century children sent into the tiny brick chimneys of London and other places to keep them free and clear of soot.
The Pokedex informs us that this Pokemon is well known for stealing food and that’s its primary livelihood. It has incredibly soft feet that make it silent as it does its dirty deeds – not that it leaves any dirt behind! Its tail swishes back and forth to sweep away any evidence.
Spotlight on Thievul
Thievul is a little over-designed for my tastes. The overall look of it is pretty complicated! But it changes out those eye patches for a full domino mask, the whiskers become a moustache and it’s got a black strip of fur down the back a little reminiscent of a cape. It has those gentleman thief vibes. I feel like if Joker from Persona 5 ever became a Pokemon Trainer, Thievul would find a place on his team.
The Pokedex tells us that this foxy fiend marks its marks with a subtle scent and follows them at a distance to pilfer and purloin their food at a later time. Its natural enemy is Boltund, which makes sense – foxes and hounds seldom mix.
Anyway, this Pokemon might be an expert thief, but can it steal the W in Pokemon GO?
With a Max CP of 2415, 172 Attack, Defense of 164 and a Stamina of 172, you’re probably not making this a staple of your team. Much like many of the early route critters (Furret, Linoone, Mightyena, Diggersby) you’re only using this Pokemon regularly if it’s a favorite. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that!
It’s a dark type so it’s weak to Bug, Fairy, and Fighting type moves, and resists Psychic, Dark, and Ghost type moves.
In terms of Fast Attacks, you have Quick Attack, Snarl, Sucker Punch, the latter two of which are STAB. For Charged Attacks you get Play Rough and Night Slash, the former of which is STAB. The Community Day option of Icy Wind, an Ice attack, is also available if you evolve your Nickit to Thievul. It’s not going to offer a wide range of coverage options but might help against opponents with the Flying, Grass, Dragon or Ground types.
Shiny Nickit is incredibly easy to spot as the coat color changes from a brown/red, to a light grey coat, reminiscent of a gray fox – not a native to Britain and in fact not even closely related to red foxes, though red fox pelts come in a massive variety of colors, including gray and silver. Skip across the channel between Galar and Kalos and you can find Fennekin who has a similar regular-to-shiny shift in coloration.
