Spotlight on Vanillite
I love this little goober. The thing is, a lot of folks judge object based Pokemon a lot more harshly than they deserve. Is it just an ice cream with a face? Sure, at its most surface level. But Gamefreak took the time to pack in some fun, original lore as well – rather than basing this Pokemon on an existing Yokai, they came up with something completely new.
The Pokedex tells us that this Pokemon was initially an icicle. One that had some sort of sentience to it. If I had to categorize it, I’d say it bears some resemblance to Tsukomogami – objects in Japanese folklore that gain sentience over time; usually 100 years. If that’s the case, an icicle that had persisted for 100 years was hit by the rays of the morning sun and wished not to melt. Time gave it will and that will was to survive. That wish gave it proper life and turned it into the creature we know and train today! It sleeps embedded in the snow and actually is only made of ice with a layer of snow stuck to it – there’s an image from a Japanese comic licensed by the Pokemon Company in which you can see it without this snow covering!
Vanillite’s original design was also the first design by James Turner that made it into the games, which is a huge deal because, before him, all Pokemon designers had been Japanese. James is British!
So, there’s a lot more to this design than just being an ice cream with a face.
Vanillish is a nice middle stage for this line that expands on Vanillite’s design a bit. The Pokedex seems a bit confused, though – in several entries it says that it uses its frosty breath to freeze opponents solid. Seems reasonable – Pokedex entries are often pretty grim. But in one entry it states that it uses Headbutt to then shatter these frozen enemies. In another it says that once its foe is frozen, Vanillish leaves, sparing its foes life because it is kind.
Well. Which is it? Cold hearted headbutting murder machine or live and let live ice cream friend?
Spotlight on Vanilluxe
And here we have Vanilluxe! The final form!
The dex entries for this one are really pretty sweet! They state that two, closely bonded Vanillish will sleep close to one another during the day. When the warm sun melts their bodies into water, it will sometimes re-freeze between the two, freezing solid and sticking them together for life! How adorable is that!?
…almost adorable enough to ignore the fact that it can also breathe out violent blizzards, solidifying water both heads have swallowed and, likewise, freezing everything on the battle field, friend or fiend alike.
But can it freeze up its opponents in Pokemon GO?
With a Max CP of 3190, 218 Attack, Defense of 184 and a Stamina of 174, it can dish out some chilly hits! But it melts like a dropped ice cream cone when put under pressure. Its Defense and Stamina just aren’t up to the task of sticking around in the ring for long.
It’s an Ice Type so it’s weak to Fighting, Fire, Rock and Steel-type moves with resistances to Ice and Ice alone. (You know what? I would have bet you money that Ice also resisted Grass Type attacks before I took the time to double check!)
In terms of Fast Attacks, you have Frost Breath and Astonish, the first of which being Stab. For Charged Attacks you get Blizzard, Flash Cannon, and Signal Beam, the first of which being Stab. The Community Day option of Avalanche is also available if you evolve your Vanillish to Vanilluxe before May 4, 2025.
Shiny Vanillite is incredibly subtle with its cone bottom being pink instead of the light teal color.
Well, Trainers! That’s all I’ve got for you this time around! As always, I wish you the absolute best of luck out there – go get yourself a treat once you’re done catching all those shinies! You’ve earned it!
