Spotlight on Frigibax
Frigibax is such a cute li’l goober. It’s the psuedo legendary monster from Paldea, so, kind of like that region’s Dratini, Larvitar or Deino.
It’s a cute design, but a little weird. The first time I saw it I thought it was a land shark kind of thing like Gible and the Pokedex does talk about this thing’s fin… though as a thermoregulatory organ much like the sail on Dimetrodon is currently thought to be. Though… the Pokedex also says that it lives in forests which is pretty untrue in regards to Scarlet and Violet as it actually lives in snowy mountains and in cold caves in those games. Weird! It uses its ice-cold breath to chill its nests and boy, wouldn’t that be a handy thing to be able to do in summer!

Arctibax is basically a perfect middle evolution. There’s no awkwardness to it at all. It takes the shark fin element and pushes it out into a full-on sail like a Spinosaurus. It’s got icy looking jaws and that perfect, hunched forward therapod design. I love it. No freaking notes.
The ‘dex says that it uses its icy jaws and the dorsal fin (Which is what we call it when it’s on a fish, or on the back of a cetacean. On Spinosaurus and other similarly adorned land vertebrates, it’s referred to as a dorsal sail. The biology on this thing is all over the place! It kinda has Generation One vibes in that regard.) in the interests of self defense. It freezes the air around itself to form the ice on its body.

Spotlight on Baxcalibur
Baxcalibur is just…
I try to be relatively positive and objective when it comes to Pokemon design. I never want to Yuck another Trainer’s Yum. I really don’t. I do my level best not to. But to say I was disappointed when my awesome frozen Spinosaurus turned into a guy in a sad rubber suit would be an understatement. I get that this is a love letter to Kaiju inspired Pokemon. I do. But we already have Tyranitar (As well as Dr. Robotnik’s creative re-imagining of Tyranitar from the future in the Same Gosh-Danged Game.) and I just feel like they could have taken this design in so many more cool and creative directions while still keeping that core concept intact.
Anyway, the Pokedex informs us that this monstrosity blasts air so cold that it can immediately freeze even molten lava. It uses this pressurized cold air to ram itself forward, dorsal blade extended to cleave foes in twain.
But can it cleave apart its foes in Pokemon GO?
With a Max CP of 4013, 254 Attack, Defense of 168 and a Stamina of 229 it’s pretty darn tough, attacking like a frozen freight train and with enough Stamina to stick around in battle for a while despite that middle tier Defense stat. It also bears mentioning that it DOES have a Mega that will no doubt be available in Pokemon GO at some point. We obviously have no confirmed info on how it will play but I have no doubt it will be a wrecking machine. (And the design is actually a little better too. Weird how adding a hilt to it’s chest kind of breaks up the design enough to make it shine.)
It’s a Dragon and Ice type so it’s weak to Dragon, Fairy, Fighting, Rock, and Steel type moves, and strong against Dragon, Flying, Grass, and Ground type moves.
In terms of Fast Attacks, you have Dragon Breath and Ice Fang, both of which being Stab. For Charged Attacks you get Outrage, Dragon Claw, Icy Wind, Avalanche, and Blizzard, again, all of which being Stab. The Community Day option of Glaive Rush is also available if you evolve your Arctibax to Baxcalibur before 9:00 pm on June 20, 2026.
Shiny Frigibax is incredibly hard to notice, as it’s body color is slightly off, but most notably the tongue and fin of Frigibax goes from dark grey to light grey when shiny and his whiskers go from yellow to light grey. Be careful when shiny hunting or you may miss it!
And that’s all I’ve got for you, Trainers! As always, I wish you the absolute best of luck out there! Stay cool, stay hydrated, have fun, be kind and catch ’em all!
