  • For $1 or your local equivalent, you can take part in a Special Research story (You can gift these passes to friends for the same price.)
  • 4 Star Raids will appear after Community Day ends featuring Primeape – beat these to have Mankey spawn within 300 meters of the Gym for 30 minutes. (Sunday, November 10th, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. local time)
  • So, let’s snag some Jelly Doughnuts and see if we can’t lure out a few Mankey, huh?

    Spotlight on Mankey

Mankey is one of the earliest available Fighting Types in Generation 1. A massive help to you for the first Gym if you didn’t grab Bulbasaur or Squirtle. It was made even easier to catch in Yellow Version because…. yikes. Your Pikachu was always going to struggle against Brock.

The Pokedex tells us one thing over… and over… and over. These Pokemon are unsafe to approach and will fly off the handle with boundless anger if any small thing set it off. It angers extremely quickly, going from docile to dangerous in no-time flat. If one Mankey in a troupe gets mad, they all get mad and will wail on whatever target is nearby at the time. This is a lot like real-life monkeys and apes who are known to be extremely vicious once provoked.

I wonder why Ash never went back for his Primeape. He was based in Kanto throughout the Journeys anime and he just kinda… forgot, I guess?

Anyway, Primeape’s Pokedex entries are very much like Mankey’s – this thing is in an almost constant state of unbridled rage. It hates being looked at so if you’re peeping on it, it will chase you down and beat you up. Super pleasant, right? The only time it can calm down is when it’s completely alone so… y’know. Hardly anyone has seen it in that state and lived to share evidence.

So. Let me ask you. Have you ever been so angry, so absolutely furious and enraged, so entirely worked up and disgruntled and just plain mad… that you thought you were gonna die?

Welp. Meet Annihilape because that’s their origin story.

A cross-gen evolution that premiered in Generation 9, Annihilape is one of the best Paldean Pokemon. I love it to death. (Literally.) I’ve always liked Mankey and Primeape so when I saw that they were getting a modern glow-up in the evolution department? I was kind of ecstatic!

The Pokedex tells us that this evolution comes from Primeape’s anger hitting a critical point then going even further beyond! That the anger it’s heart held dormant for so long rose and couldn’t be contained by the mere mortal shell provided by your average simian. This ghostly gibbon, this unbound baboon, this outraged orangutan got so absolutely furious that its heart exploded and it became a literal angry ghost.

But can it, likewise, send its opponents to the grave in Pokemon GO?

With a Max CP of 3695, Attack of 220, Defense of 178 and Stamina of 242? Yeah. It can do a decent amount of damage! It’s a Fighting/Ghost Type as well which gives it a really good resistance to Bug, Normal and Fighting Type moves. It has regular resistances to Poison and Rock. It’s weak to Flying, Psychic, Ghost and Fairy Type moves. So, good stats and a great Typing make this a Monkey to watch out for!

In terms of Fast Attacks you have Counter and Low Kick, both STAB. For your Charged Attacks you have Ice Punch, Night Slash, Shadow Ball, Low Sweep and Close Combat, the latter three of which are STAB. The Community Day move, Rage Fist, will of course be a fantastic STAB option as well. It’s a Ghost Type move.

Shiny Mankey are a cute mint-green color. Primeape’s shiny is underwhelming as it’s just a slightly more saturated version of its regular colors. Shiny Annihilape is a cooler, more saturated blue as well so not especially different.

And that’s all I’ve got for you, Trainers! Have fun out there, be kind to one another above all else and remember that I’m here wishing you the absolute best of luck!
